A Rehearsal :: And A Gear Review

Last night we headed over to the Gate’s on Roblin for Jen and DJ’s wedding rehearsal (their wedding is tomorrow) to test out a new camera in some low light action. The rehearsal didn’t start until about 7:10pm, and as we all know it’s pretty much pitch black by 8pm these days. Now as you may notice from our work, we enjoy real natural light.

We find flash to be very fake looking, and mood killing, that’s why we avoid it as much as possible. The only way to keep shooting in these conditions is to either, open up your aperture as much as possible, really lower your shutter speed, or boost up the ISO. The problem with opening your aperture wide open, is you end up with a very very shallow depth of field, meaning if I focus on someone’s face and there is another person standing directly behind them, that second person will be out of focus. Lowering the shutter speed leads to blur, which means trying to freeze action is very difficult. So last but not least, cranking up the ISO. Basically digital ISO works in the same principal as film ISO. The digital sensor is super charged to record as much light as possible, but like the film world, this leads to one thing…. the all to dreaded NOISE.

As cameras have progressed, and evolved, noise suppression, and better digital sensors have moved forward leaps and bounds. The camera’s we first shot weddings with, if you went above ISO 800 the pictures were almost not useable because the amount of noise in the image. Last night we had the opportunity to try out a Canon 1DMKIII, and all we can say is WOW. When looking at the images, remember what we mentioned about ISO 800. All of the photos below, we’re shot between ISO1000 and ISO6400. Talk about incredible!!! The final images in the series, we’re photographed in basically no light, and with no flash. We can’t wait to rock this camera at tomorrow’s wedding!!

All the best =) from your Winnipeg Photographers Jake + Jess

    Nice to see some good press on the MIII. I’ve been working one for 5 months and have NO AF ISSUES and love the IQ.
